Washington state benefits from a vibrant nonprofit community.
According to research by Washington Nonprofits, there are approximately 30,000 federally-recognized tax exempt nonprofit organizations in Washington state. The majority of these nonprofits are small, volunteer-led organizations. Only one in five reported paying staff wages.
There is no such thing as a typical nonprofit. Nonprofits can be all volunteer or can have large staffs with multiple locations. Missions range from adult education to youth services, from animals to arts and culture, and from indigenous people to immigration and refugees. The common bond is a dedication to serve the people of Washington state.
